The Embassy of China in Washington, D.C. is the diplomatic mission of The People's Republic of China to the United States. It is located at 3505 International Place ,NW, Washington, D.C., in the Cleveland Park neighborhood.  The embassy also operates consulates in Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City. At the beginning of 2013 the embassy changed the way they issue visas and legalize documents. Instead of having all the official work being done at the embassy in D.C., they decided to create 6 territories in the U.S. Each territory is comprised of a number of states and has its own consulate. Also, if a document was issued or notarized in a particular state, it must be presented to the consulate which has jurisdiction over that state to be legalized.

The embassy does not allow any attached statement from another state to the document that could change its jurisdiction.  Rules vary from one consulate to another,  but all of them request form G1 "Application Form for Authentication or Notarization". This form must be filled and signed by the individual or a person who work for the business requesting the authentication. This person does not have to be the same signer on the document, but must be working at the same company. The G1 form signer must also submit a copy of his picture ID. The embassy or consulate will compare the signature of the signer on the ID and the form to confirm that they are the same. Also if the ID was expired, the document will be rejected.
